Atlantic Salmon Fly Fishing at Miramichi Black Rapids Lodge
Known as "The King of All Game Fish", Atlantic salmon populations, once on the decline due to commercial over-fishing and canneries, have been steadily increasing since The Atlantic Salmon Federation intervened in the early 1980's, and are approaching "good ole day" numbers. While Atlantic salmon may never be a high volume sport, fish pushing 30 lbs on a fly rod river make the Miramichi Black Rapids Lodge a true trophy fishery! The spring run (April 14 - June 30) begins as soon as the winter ice has melted. This is when high volumes of hungry Atlantic salmon are heading for the ocean after a winter upstream. The conditions created from the melting ice cause the river to run high and swift, making fishing by boat the best practice. During the spring run guests can expect to land multiple salmon each day - the 2006 average was 7 fish per day! Autumn, and the fall run (August 15 - October 15) at the Miramichi Black Rapids Lodge offers a different perspective on angling for Atlantic salmon. During this time big bright salmon are heading back inland for the long winter. The pools on the river swell with fish that are waiting to migrate up the river to spawning tributaries. The scenery is breathtaking as leaves are showing their fall color and the air is crisp. Fall fishing is done from the river banks, and in waders. The River is just steps away from the lodge, so guests simply strap on their waders and begin casting a fly. Our private salmon pools lay footsteps away from your private room at the Miramichi Black Rapids Lodge, and the only decision to make is how early you want to start casting. Our guides are the best on the river and will take you to private pools on our one-mile stretch, or secluded runs on two miles of adjacent rivers. Experienced Miramichi guides watch the river daily, keeping tabs on the salmon so they can place our clients in the best places, with the right flies. All Atlantic salmon fly fishing at the Miramichi Black Rapids Lodge is catch-and-release.
